Foil versus balayage explained
Highlights at Citycuts use two primary approaches: foil placement for precise, uniform lightening and balayage for hand-painted, softer transitions. Both techniques lift pigment to add dimension and brightness throughout the hair. Choice depends on desired contrast, maintenance preferences, and existing color; your stylist will explain trade-offs so the final result balances depth and natural movement without unnecessary processing.
Timing varies by service: partial highlights typically take 2–2.5 hours, full highlights 2.5–3.5 hours, and balayage 2.5–4 hours. All highlight services include a toner to fine-tune shade and neutralize unwanted tones. For major changes or corrective work we offer complimentary consultations to review hair history, assess damage, and plan a staged approach when needed.
During your highlights appointment
Your appointment begins with a focused consultation that reviews goals, recent color history, and realistic expectations. For major changes or repairs, we may perform a strand test and outline staged steps. Placement decisions — face-framing, full head, or lowlights — are made with your lifestyle and maintenance needs in mind to keep results wearable for commuting families and busy Houston schedules.
For color services arrive with day-old hair; natural oils protect your scalp and color processing. Stylists note thick hair can take longer to color and may require more product and time, so plan accordingly. Our Copperfield location offers practical car access from Highway 6, FM 529, and nearby shopping centers — helpful for parents juggling school runs and weekday commutes.
Aftercare, longevity, and local climate
Houston’s hot, humid summers and frequent rain can influence color longevity and how highlights appear. Sun exposure and hard water may accelerate fading or brassiness; your stylist will recommend color-safe shampoos, conditioners, and occasional toning to preserve brightness. Clients who had corrective services noted product changes and short recovery periods improved hair health before further lightening.
Balayage offers softer grow-out and lower-maintenance refreshes, while foil highlights give sharper contrast that often needs more frequent toning. May through July are our busiest months as clients prepare for summer events, so schedule ahead for peak availability. We’ll outline maintenance intervals and at-home care during booking to fit your schedule.
